Black Friday protest planned for Michigan Walmart store.

Some workers from at least one Walmart store in Michigan reportedly plan to walk out and protest the retailer on Thanksgiving.

Walmart store and distribution center workers began walking off the job at several locations throughout the country last week, calling for better wages and benefits and fair scheduling. The actions came on the heels of pickets at about a dozen locations nationwide last month.

A protest at the Walmart at 2640 Crossing Circle in Traverse City is scheduled to begin when the Black Friday sale begins at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, according to Making a Change at Walmart.

The group, anchored by the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, is helping to organize the events along with Organization United for Respect (OUR) Walmart.

Several other civil rights groups and other organizations have offered their support.

“Walmart’s workers are dedicated to giving 100 percent to the jobs that they do,” Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Center for Community Change, said in a statement. “The company must be as dedicated to its workers as it is to its profit margin.”

Organizers are calling the actions “strikes,” though employees of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are not unionized.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant recently filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the UFCW, which has previously attempted to unionize Walmart workers, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Walmart called UFCW’s efforts a publicity stunt.

“We care about our associates and our associates care about providing a great customer experience on Black Friday,” Walmart spokesperson Kory Lundberg said in a statement. “We’re confident that’s what our associates will deliver for customers this year at Walmart.”

Walmart has more than 90 locations in Michigan. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which also owns Sam’s Club, employs about 32,080 people in Michigan at 117 Walmart and Sam’s stores and one distribution center.

Injuries, arrests in clashes between protesters and police

A standoff between police and anti-war demonstrators near the NATO summit at McCormick Place left several protesters bloodied and led to dozens of arrests, as delegates gathered for the first of two days of meetings.

The confrontation, which flared up late this afternoon near the corner of Michigan Avenue and Cermak Road, lasted for almost two hours, as officers in full riot gear went nose to nose with demonstrators, with police determined to keep the crowd away from the convention center where NATO delegates were meeting.
